Radcliffe Alumnae Professor and professor of mathematics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Sophie Morel is one of the world’s most promising mathematicians working in number theory, algebraic geometry, and representation theory. In her doctoral thesis, she solved a problem that had vexed mathematicians for more than 20 years.
Morel earned her PhD in 2005 from Université Paris-Sud 11. From 2005 to 2009, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and a research fellow at the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge. She will maintain the latter affiliation until 2011.
See Morel's faculty profile on Harvard's Department of Mathematics Web site, and the Harvard Gazette article, "Mathematician Gains Dual Appointments."
