Phylogenetic Analysis of the Musical Rhythms of the World

Senior Partner: Godfried  Toussaint

Computer Science

During my fellowship year, I will analyze traditional world music. By using tools from computer science, mathematics, music theory, psychology, and computational biology, I will be able to obtain an evolutionary phylogeny of world rhythm.

It would be useful to have the research partner transcribe rhythms into binary sequences and write several computer programs to analyze the sequences.

Ideally, the junior research partner should have a background in computer science. It would be helpful if the student were also a percussionist or drummer with some knowledge of music, or a music theory person who is very familiar with computer programming.
