Position of the Stars

Film, Video, Sound, and New Media

In the last 15 years, I have developed a theoretical perspective and a practical technique for my nonfiction films called Single-Shot Cinema.  This involves long takes with a constantly moving camera.

During 2009–2010, I will edit a new feature-length documentary set in Indonesia called Position of the Stars. I will also develop my Single-Shot Cinema theoretical perspective and begin writing a book about it.

I am seeking assistance in building an on-line community interested in this filmmaking style. The student research partner would help me design the content of this on-line community. The student will examine 400 hours of material to find smooth transition shots for use in the film and on the Web site.

My projects will benefit from an undergraduate, preferably in film studies or anthropology, interested in film, documentaries, and camera movements. The student should have some experience in designing Web sites (as opposed to building them).

This project will give the student an opportunity to be involved in the development of a revolutionary method of filmmaking. This new way of filmmaking has become popular in recent years among film directors and directors of photography, and at film festivals (e.g., Sundance 2005, International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2004).
