The Hedda Morrison Archive at Harvard-Yenching Library
Senior Partner: Claire Roberts
Asian Art History
During my fellowship, I will conduct research for a publication on the photographs of Hedda Hammer Morrison (1908–1991), one of Peking's longest residing international photographers and the most important female photographer to have worked in pre-1949 China. Morrison trained as a photographer in Germany and lived and worked in Peking from 1933 to 1946. Her archive of some 10,000 negatives is held in the Harvard-Yenching Library. This new research will take account of her training in Germany and her relationship to modern German and international photographic history.
The research partner should be fluent in German and have a background or interest in visual culture. Tasks will include library and archival research to source materials in German, analysis and translation of selected documents and texts written in German, and discussion of those texts with the research fellow. Benefits to the student include an introduction to some of the rich photographic collections held at Harvard University and the opportunity to contribute to a research project that encompasses the consideration of visual cultures in Europe and Asia. I welcome a research partner who has initiative and the ability to work independently as required.
